Accelerate career growth with three New Year’s resolutions

Accelerate your career
Are you ready to expand your potential this year? Accelerate career growth with these three New Year's resolutions.

The chance to reset greets us each morning, so if you missed making your resolutions on New Year’s Eve, never fear. Plenty of opportunity remains for you in 2022—especially if you’re looking to accelerate career growth. Make these three resolutions to supercharge your career—and be sure to check out our latest career opportunities to see if one might be the ideal fit for you.

Resolution #1: Set SMART goals

Start by resolving to put your goals in writing. Advice you’ve heard before, right? For good reason: studies show that those who write down their goals are 42% more likely to achieve them.

But don’t just jot down any old goals. Instead, set SMART goals: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. SMART goals help you avoid unrealistic, vague goals and force you to answer critical questions that define your path forward and the actions you need to take.

In fact, some time-management professionals advocate for SMARTER goals, adding “evaluated” and “reviewed” to the list. These additions reflect the importance of efficacy and feedback. After all, reviews aren’t just for restaurants and online purchases. So, as you build your SMART goals, take stock of your latest performance reviews, and be honest with yourself. To help you get started, use this outline to set the SMART (or SMARTER!) goals you need to accelerate career growth.

Resolution #2: Find a mentor

Once you’ve outlined your goals, you needn’t go it alone. Find a mentor to help you along the way. Mentors provide an objective view of your career, help identify blind spots, clarify your strengths, and supply invaluable insights based on their own experience and career trajectory. In fact, 75% of executives consider mentorship critical to professional success.

Mentorship becomes more meaningful when you have a career goal in mind. So, use your SMART goals to help inform what you need from a mentor and then make a list of these requirements and expectations. To find a mentor, identify people in your network who have achieved success in fields you want to work in. Then, be prepared to schedule a meeting to explain why you’re seeking mentorship and why you’ve chosen them.

Resolution #3: Fuel a growth mindset

Settling into a work routine can enable efficiency. But to advance your career, you’ll need to challenge yourself. Consider seeking stretch projects at work. Stretch projects can help you deepen your core expertise, acquire new skills, and gain exposure across the workplace. Of course, not every stretch project will provide the growth and opportunity you’re seeking. Make sure the project aligns with your SMART goals. You can also review 4 Rules for Accepting a Stretch Assignment to help you determine if a project makes sense for you.

Additionally, make growth and learning a habit. Carve out time each week for ongoing learning, whether conferences, certification courses, evening classes, or even industry books, to help you achieve your SMART goals. Just one hour a week can make a big difference!
